Designer’s Profile: Filippo Dell’Orto established the Italian architecture and design firm SpHaus two years ago after many years of being an interior designer. The collection was launched at the Milan Furniture Fair this spring. Dell’Orto explains what drove him to design furniture: ‘I chose to design my own pieces because I was always unsatisfied with what was available when decorating a private apartment or a public space.’ The SpHaus collection is a colourful selection of functional chairs, tables and lights, which combine retro, 1960s forms with the sleekness of hi-tech.
SpHaus aims to break the hold the classics have on our purchasing power. Buyers and agents have been snapping up the collection, the bulk of which so far, has been designed by Dell’Orto. There have been collaborations with well-regarded artists Roberta Savelli and Anglo-Italian architectural duo King Roselli, known for the hip Hotel Ripa and Hotel Es, in Rome. Dell’Orto intends to eventually leave the designing to someone who can follow him on his quest against the mass standardisation of design.
