Designer’s Profile: Mamoun Sakkal’s calligraphic artwork was featured in two recently published books: “Islamic Art and Architecture” published by Koneman Publishers in Cologne, Germany, and “Arabic Typography” by Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFares, published by Saqi Books in London. One of his calligraphic artwork pieces will be among 18 pieces included with the textbook “Art: A Personal Journey,” a middle school art program authored by Marilyn Stewart and Eldon Katter, and published by Davis Publications in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Mamoun was selected by the Seattle Arts Commission to design a public piece of artwork for Seattle Millennium Artworks Project. His work, incorporating a poem by the Syrian poet Suliman al Isa, was installed in Seattle Center during the winter of 1999 and spring of 2000. His calligraphic artwork was exhibited in one-man shows at the University of Kentucky in Lexington where he also gave a lecture and a workshop, Arab American Community Center of Houston, Texas, and Islamic Society of North America convention in Chicago, IL.
One of his calligraphic paintings was also included in the First Painting Biennial of the Islamic World in Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art. His calligraphy and graphics included work for the Discovery Channel, Seattle Times newspaper, Radius of Arab American Writers (RAWI), Cune Press, Iqra Magazine, and a residence in Spain, where he designed and produced Kufi calligraphy inside two domes.
